Yes. Shorter cable locks exist, but they are sold as general bike locks rather than generator-specific security cables. Generator cables tend to run longer because they must wrap around a frame and a handle. I look for coiled cable locks sized for a seatpost or rack, since a long generator cable just adds bulk and … Read more
A generator security cable lock can secure a motorcycle or ATV when its cable is long enough to loop through a frame or wheel and its lock resists cutting and picking. Most cables of this type measure roughly 6 to 10 feet and use braided steel with a vinyl coating. I like to thread mine … Read more
Yes. Many generator security cable locks now feature ergonomic combination dials designed for easier gripping, turning, and reading in low light or cold weather. I look for larger, textured dials with clear numbers and firm clicks, since gloves and stiff fingers make tiny dials frustrating. A good dial lets me lock up fast without fumbling. … Read more
Yes. Combination dials on generator locks can be turned with arthritic hands, but grip strength and dial size make a big difference. I look for locks with larger, raised dials and wider spacing, since those need less pinch force. A small rubber jar opener also helps me grip and spin each dial. Easy Dials For … Read more
Thieves cut a generator security cable lock by pressing a thin abrasive disc spinning at roughly 10,000 RPM against the cable until the strands part. Most cut through a braided steel cable in under a minute, often in two quick passes from opposite sides. The cutter never touches the lock body itself, just the softest … Read more
Reducing the force needed on a generator security cable lock pin starts with lubrication and alignment, since dry or misaligned pins bind and require extra pressure to seat or release. I always check that the cable end lines up straight with the pin hole before pushing. A drop of graphite or silicone spray on the … Read more
Yes. A hardened steel cable lock with a laminated padlock resists cutting tools better than most standard chains of similar weight. Cable locks also stay flexible and compact, so they fit tight spaces a bulky chain cannot reach. I like cable locks because they are lighter to carry and harder to attack with bolt cutters … Read more
Internal teeth on a generator security cable lock jam or slip when dirt, rust, or ice builds up between the locking pawls and the cable grooves. A worn or bent pawl spring, common after years of outdoor use, also stops the teeth from gripping the cable. I check my lock every spring by spraying graphite … Read more
A generator security cable lock cable usually snaps because of repeated bending fatigue, internal rust, or a sharp pull that exceeds its rated strength. Most cables are braided steel strands, often 8 to 12 mm thick, and they fail at the weakest point. I have seen cables snap after months of vibration against a metal … Read more
Yes. A quality generator security cable lock can survive overnight outdoor storage if it is made from hardened, weather-resistant materials. I look for braided steel cables with a vinyl or nylon sleeve, plus a lock body sealed against rain and dirt. I also keep the lock off the ground so water cannot pool inside it. … Read more
