If you’re running an Onan or Cummins generator, you already know a cheap air filter can choke your engine and cost you big. I’ve tested a pile of options to find the best generator air filter that is made of high-quality paper like Wix filters—media that actually traps dust without restricting airflow. The WIX 49087 scores a 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 400 buyers, and for good reason.
Every filter on this list meets three hard criteria: it’s built with dense, pleated paper media (not foam or gauze), it fits popular Onan and Cummins RV generator models, and it has at least a 4.5-star average rating from real owners. I ranked them by filtration quality, fit accuracy, and overall value—no fluff, just what works.

How I Selected These Products
I only considered filters with dense, pleated paper media that actually traps fine dust without choking airflow. Every model had to fit popular Onan and Cummins RV generator engines. I also checked that each had a verified 4.5-star average rating or higher from real buyers.
Value mattered too. I compared build quality, filter thickness, and seal tightness against price. A cheap filter that lets dirt through is no bargain, so I ranked by real-world protection first, then cost. I also looked for models with strong availability and easy returns.
Finally, I pored through hundreds of user reviews looking for consistent praise on fit, longevity, and engine protection. Filters that had complaints about poor sealing or early clogging got dropped. The five here earned their spots through reliable performance and honest feedback from owners.

With a 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 400 buyers, it’s the most trusted filter on this list. It’s also an Amazon’s Choice pick, which matches my own testing results.
This is your best bet if you want a filter that just fits and works on your Onan generator. My only complaint is that it’s a bit smaller than some generic options at just 2 inches long, so double-check your housing dimensions before ordering.

If you want the peace of mind of a factory-spec filter for your Cummins Onan generator, this is it. The catch is that you pay a premium for the Cummins name, and it offers no performance advantage over the WIX equivalent for most users.

The HAQQI 140-3116 earned a perfect 5.0 out of 5 stars from its first 39 buyers, which is rare for any filter. It fits a huge range of Cummins Onan models including QG5500, 7000, HGJAC, HGJAB, HGJAA, Marquis Gold, and Marquis Platinum. The paper media is comparable to the WIX filters I tested, making this a strong value pick.
This is the filter to grab if you want broad compatibility across multiple generator models at a low cost. The downside is the small sample size of 39 ratings means the perfect score could change as more reviews come in.
✅ Pros
- Perfect 5.0-star rating from verified buyers
- Fits a wide range of Cummins Onan RV generator models
- Amazon’s Choice with 50+ bought per month
- Paper media quality comparable to WIX filters
❌ Cons
- Only 39 ratings means the perfect score isn’t fully proven
- Less brand recognition than WIX or Cummins
What to Look for in Generator Air Filter that is made of high-quality paper like Wix filters
Picking the wrong air filter for your generator can let dirt into the engine and shorten its life fast. I’ve seen too many buyers grab a cheap foam filter or a paper filter that doesn’t seal right, and then wonder why their generator struggles. Here’s what I actually check before buying any filter.
Filter Media Type
The media is the most important part of any air filter. I always look for dense, pleated paper media like what Wix uses — it traps fine dust particles without restricting airflow. Foam filters let more dirt through, and cheap paper can collapse under heavy use. Stick with high-quality paper media that’s rated for your generator’s engine size.
Fit and Dimensions
A filter that doesn’t fit right is worse than no filter at all. I measure the length, width, and depth of my generator’s air box before ordering, and I compare that to the product dimensions listed. Filters like the CUMMINS 1403116 come in at 10.5 inches long, while others are much smaller — so checking those numbers saves you a return hassle.
Brand Reputation and Ratings
I don’t trust a filter just because it’s cheap. I look at the total number of reviews and the average star rating to see if real owners are happy. A filter with 1,000+ ratings and a 4.8 average tells me it’s been tested by lots of people in real conditions, while a perfect 5.0 from only 30 reviews doesn’t give me the same confidence.
Seal and Gasket Quality
The gasket around the filter edge is what keeps unfiltered air from sneaking past. I run my finger around the seal to check that it’s soft and pliable, not hard or cracked. A poor seal lets dust bypass the filter entirely, which is why I pay close attention to build quality on budget options.
Compatibility with Your Generator Model
Not all generator air filters are universal, even if they look similar. I always cross-reference the filter’s part number with my generator’s make and model — Onan and Cummins generators use specific part numbers like 140-3116 or 49087. Using the wrong one can cause poor fit or even engine damage over time.
My Shortcut Advice: Just buy the WIX 49087 if it fits your Onan generator — it’s the most proven filter on this list with over 400 reviews and paper media that actually works. Save yourself the headache of guessing and check your air box dimensions first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best generator air filter that is made of high-quality paper like Wix filters?
I’d say the WIX 49087 is the best overall pick for most Onan generators. It has a 4.8-star rating from over 400 buyers, uses dense pleated paper media, and is an Amazon’s Choice product. If you need a filter for a diesel Onan Quiet 7500, go with the WIX 49697 instead.
How often should I replace my generator air filter?
I recommend checking it every 50 hours of run time or once a season, whichever comes first. If you run your generator in dusty conditions, you might need to swap it every 25 hours. A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes your engine run rich, which wastes fuel and causes carbon buildup.
Can I use a Cummins 1403116 filter on an Onan generator?
Yes, the CUMMINS NW 1403116 is designed to fit Onan generators as well as Cummins models. It measures 10.5 inches long and has a 4.8-star rating from nearly 1,500 buyers. I’ve tested it on several Onan RV generators and the fit is exact.
Is a budget filter like the HAQQI 140-3116 worth buying?
For the price, the HAQQI 140-3116 is worth it if you’re on a tight budget and need a filter that fits multiple Cummins Onan models like QG5500 and Marquis Gold. It has a perfect 5.0-star rating so far, but that’s only from 39 reviews. I’d still trust the WIX or Cummins OEM filters more for long-term reliability.
What’s the difference between the WIX 49087 and the WIX 49697?
The WIX 49087 is designed for standard Onan generators, while the WIX 49697 is specifically built for the Onan Quiet 7500 diesel generator. The 49697 has a slightly higher 4.9-star rating but only 59 reviews, compared to the 49087’s 411 ratings. Both use the same high-quality paper media, so pick based on your generator model.
How do I know if my generator air filter is the right size?
I always measure the length, width, and depth of my generator’s air box before ordering. For example, the CUMMINS 1403116 is 10.5 inches long, while the WIX 49087 is only 2 inches long. Check the product dimensions listed on Amazon and compare them to your old filter or air box housing.
Can a dirty air filter damage my generator engine?
Absolutely. A clogged air filter lets dirt and debris bypass the media, which can score cylinder walls and wear out piston rings. I’ve seen generators lose compression and burn oil because owners neglected the air filter. Replacing it regularly is cheap insurance against expensive engine repairs.
Should I buy an OEM Cummins filter or an aftermarket replacement?
If you want guaranteed fit and don’t mind paying a bit more, go with the OEM CUMMINS NW 1403116 — it’s the most proven filter on this list with 1,499 ratings. But the WIX 49087 uses the same quality paper media and costs less, so I’d pick that for most standard Onan generators.
My Final Verdict
The WIX 49087 is the best generator air filter that is made of high-quality paper like Wix filters, hands down. With a 4.8-star rating from 411 buyers, dense pleated media, and a vehicle-specific fit for Onan generators, it’s the most proven filter on this list. The WIX 49697 is my runner-up for diesel Onan Quiet 7500 owners, and the MOWFILL 1403116 is the budget pick that still uses paper media and holds a solid 4.7-star average from 132 ratings.
If you’re still undecided, here’s my simple rule: buy the WIX 49087 if it fits your generator — it’s the safest bet. If budget is your main concern, the MOWFILL 1403116 delivers good filtration at a fraction of the cost.
